It's official, 2011 is the Second Wettest Year On Record in Stark County, Ohio.

I asked WEWS News Channel 5 Meteorologist Christine Ferreira where 2011 ranks on the Wettest Years On Record In Stark County list via Twitter this morning.

She tweeted, "Officially at the Akron/Canton airport, 2011 is the 2nd wettest on record. 58.38"

Curious, I asked about the top three Wettest Years On Record...

This is a shot of the Timken Gatehouse that sits on the west side of the walking track in Stadium Park.

I have always admired this, however, it is the constant target of vandalism and the grounds around it are unkempt. It is all that remains of the Timken mansion that is now the Mercy Medical Center. I would love to see the inside one day.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame and Museum was named the Image Which Best Represents Stark County with 64% of the vote, besting second-place McKinley Monument by 47%.

The next poll topic was, Which Stark County drive in restaurant do you like best? Woody's Root Beer Stand was named Stark County, Ohio's Favorite Drive-In Restaurant with 64% of the vote, besting Swensons by nearly 20%.

The next question was, What is Stark County's favorite ice cream treat? Taggarts Ice Cream Parlor's The Bittner earned the title of Stark County's Favorite Ice Cream Treat with 50% of the total vote, beating the Hot Fudge Waffle Sundae from Milk and Honey by 24%.

With no shortage of parks in Stark County readers were asked which of the county's parks they consider to be the best. Mary C. Metzger Park, in Louisville, earned the title of The Best Park In Stark County, Ohio with 23% of the total vote. Sippo Lake Park in Perry Township and Stadium Park in Canton tied for second-place, each 6% behind Metzger.

Which pizza shop is Stark County's best? That was the question asked in the next poll. 36% of voters named Victorio's Pizza Stark County, Ohio's Best Pizza Shop, easily besting second-place Kraus' Pizza by 9%.

The sixth Taking Stark County, Ohio's Pulse poll asked the question, Which school do you rate as Stark County's Top High School? Canton McKinley drew 24% of the vote to be named Stark County, Ohio's Top High School. Louisville High School finished second, beaten by 6%.

The next Taking Stark County, Ohio's Pulse poll got to the heart of the matter asking the question, Which Stark County, Ohio community has the most pride? Claiming the title of Stark County, Ohio's Proudest Community, with 23% of the vote, was Perry Township, topping runner-up Massillon by 6%.

Breakfast was the topic of the eighth Taking Stark County's Pulse poll. The question asked was, Which restaurant serves the best breakfast in Stark County? The winner, named Stark County's Best Breakfast Restaurant, was Sisters Century House, recipient of 303 votes.

Returning to the topic of education, the next Taking Stark County, Ohio's Pulse poll asked the question: Which institution of higher learning do you rate as Stark County's Top College? The University of Mount Union drew 49% of the vote to be named Stark County's Top College, besting second-place Malone University by 26%.

Which restaurant serves the best burger in Stark County? That was the question asked in the 10th Taking Stark County, Ohio's Pulse poll. 37% answered Schnab's Burgers, making it Stark County's Best Burger; easily beating Firehouse Grille and Pub - Navarre by 18%.

The next Taking Stark County's Pulse poll asked the question: Whose the "Java King" in Stark County, aka Stark County, Ohio's Best Coffee Spot? CARPE DIEM Coffee Shop, recipient of 34% of the total vote, was named Stark County's Best Coffee Shop, beating Muggswigz Coffee and Tea Company by 11%.

Which agent is #1 in Stark County real estate? That's the question which was asked in the 12th Taking Stark County, Ohio's Pulse poll. Named #1 in Stark County Real Estate, the recipient of 32% of the total vote, was Dreama Petitti of Howard Hanna Real Estate.

Which casual dining restaurant is Stark county's best? That was the question posed in the next Taking Stark County, Ohio's Pulse poll. Vito Corleone's Italian Grille drew 34% of the total vote, 12% more votes than The Flipside Grille, to be named the Best Casual Dining Restaurant In Stark County.

The question asked in the 14th Taking Stark County, Ohio's Pulse poll was: Which course is the BEST public golf course in Stark County? 26% of the votes cast went to The Quarry Golf Club, making it Stark County, Ohio's Best Public Golf Course. The Quarry beat The Legends of Massillon by 8%.

Which ice cream shop is the best in Stark County? That was the next Taking Stark County, Ohio's Pulse poll topic. Smith's Old Fashioned Ice Cream (at Smith's Waco Market) drew 44% of the total vote, 19% more than runner-up Merry's, to be named Stark County, Ohio's Best Ice Cream Shop.

The 16th, and last completed, Taking Stark County's Pulse poll asked, Which restaurant is the best of Stark County's diners' drive-ins and dives? The Flipside Grille drew 68% of the total vote, 61% more than second-place Top Of The Viaduct, to claim the title The Best Of Stark County, Ohio's Diners, Drive-Ins And Dives.

This is a shot of the old McKinley High School located on Market Avenue in Canton. It now houses a nursing home and a number of businesses. I love the huge columns, such a landmark for those who attended there before the new school was built. I'm glad they turned it into such a much-needed service building as opposed to demolishing it.

A Perfect Day to Visit The Nature Center

With a high temperature near 60 degrees the day after Thanksgiving we couldn't think of anything better to do than visit the University of Mount Union's John T. Huston - Dr. John D. Brumbaugh Nature Center. It was a perfect day for a walk.

Instead of focusing on one of the main trails today, either the red or yellow on the map below, we decided to sample a handful.

We checked out the barn, then headed for the trails.

Initially we considered taking the boardwalk to the pond, but decided to hit the Aspen Trail first instead.

I hadn't been to The Nature Center since early spring, making this the first time I'd seen the new trail markers. I think it's a great improvement.

As I recall, when I visited The Nature Center for the first time a year ago it was the Aspen Trail that initially drew me in and caused me to want to explore further. I'd guess I've visited a dozen times since then and Aspen Trail remains one of my favorites...

Next we hit the Flat Top Trail. This is one of my favorites, I often hike the length of it.

One of the things that I've always liked about this trail, I suspect, is that it reminds me in a way of walks in the woods I used to take when I was growing up in the country...

Next we hit the Houston Woods Trail. Another favorite I often hike from end to end. Today we only did a small bit of it.

We wrapped things up on the Sassafras Trail, and headed for the pond....

The Nature Center, one of my favorite spots in Stark County. If you see me there, don't hesitate to give me a shout.

The latest Taking Stark County's Pulse poll, number 16 in the series, asked the question, Which restaurant is the best of Stark County's diners' drive-ins and dives?

Stark County, Ohio News and Views... readers responded, delivering the largest margin of victory in the history of the poll, by far!

Which restaurant is the Best Of Stark County's Diners, Drive-Ins And Dives? The Flipside Grille.

164 votes were cast for the Best of Stark County's Diners, Drive-Ins And Dives. 112 of those votes, that's 68% of the total number cast, went to The Flipside Grille!

To put the enormity of The Flipside Grille's win into perspective consider that only one of the other nine entries attracted as many as 10 votes.

In fact The Flipside Grille's total bested the other nine entries combined by a count of 112-52!!

The runner-up was Top Of The Viaduct, recipient of 12 votes which was equal to 7% of the total number of votes cast.

Day #66 I had hoped to get a shot of him in flight. After approximately half an hour he took off in the other direction (fast) so this was the best I could do.

Day #70 Ralph Regula Federal Building and United States Court House, Canton.

Day #72 I love the Maple Turkey they have at Giant Eagle's deli counter, but the best part of this sandwich, I promise you, is the Cranberry Orange Relish.

Day #78 It's 47 degrees, just went out to shoot a photo of the day and a jogger came past the house. I'd say a number of phrases could be attached, I'll go with committed to exercise.

Kevin L. Davis said of the statue, "The significance of doing The Tin Man (in this way) is that he has a new heart and is feeling rejected now that dorothy has returned to Kansas. That is the reason he is sad."

Last summer, August, 2010, I ran a post saying we must do a better job of thanking veterans, and active duty military, for their service.

One of the things I do, in my campaign to say Thanks, is to place my business card on cars, under the windshield wiper on on the driver's side door, when I see a license plate reflecting military service. I write a simple message, Thank you for your service.

Every now and then when I'm putting a card out the person will appear. The last thing I want to do is impose upon or bother someone, only to say thanks. I've never had one be unhappy to receive my note. I take a moment to ask about their service, what job they had if nothing else.

However many veterans and/or active duty military I thank in my lifetime, whether talking with them or putting out business cards, it will be no more than a tiny percentage. It doesn't take any time and requires little effort, I encourage you...don't miss an opportunity to say Thank You.

I can use more business cards, the more I have the more I'll put out, and if you want to help me cover the cost I'd appreciate your assistance...

Canton Farmer’s Market Ends Season Tomorrow

Tomorrow is the last day of the Canton Farmers Market 2011 season.

This week's email from the Canton Development Partnership, a Department of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, who puts on the Canton Farmers Market, states, "Stop by and join us to receive Fall Organic Gardening Tips from Cindy Petitti, listen to the fabulous music of Tim Griffiths, check in with your favorite Aultman nurses and pick up some produce from our wonderful market vendors!"

This week's farmers market will be featuring pumpkins, gourds, red beets, onions, radishes, yellow squash, winter squash, potatoes, cabbage as well as different varieties of apples and pears.

Vendors will be on hand with fresh cider, local orchard honey, apple butter, organic cheeses, fresh baked goods, flowers, pastries as well as natural soaps and lotions.

1950s Era Restaurant Out Of Business In Canton

It was in the early 1990s that I first went to Knight's, which has most recently been known as Riviera, Restaurant. Everything about it reminded me of the restaurants I'd seen in movies set in the 1950s, including the cigarette smoke hanging heavy in the air.

I've mentioned this to people who are old enough to have spent their high school years in such restaurants and every one recounting spending time in places exactly like Knight's/Riviera.

More than one has said the food at Riviera Restaurant reminded them of what was standard fare during that era as well...

This afternoon I learned that Riveria Restaurant has gone out of business. News that would not be notable if it was not for the fact that Knight's/Riviera Restaurant remained a throwback to the 1950s more than 50 years since that decade ended!

I shot these photos at Riviera Restaurant earlier this year when I was organizing the Taking Stark County's Pulse poll, The Best of Stark County's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

North Canton Pumpkin Patch Offers More Than Run Of The Mill Pumpkins

Shopping for Halloween pumpkins? Looking for something unique? Check out the Pumpkin Patch at North Canton Church of Christ. They have pumpkins for sale you're not likely to find anywhere else and the money raised goes to a good cause!

This is the second year that the North Canton Church of Christ has run a Pumpkin Patch fund raiser. All money raised goes to the funding of mission trips.

Also benefiting from the Pumpkin Patch is a Navajo reservation in Arizona that supplies North Canton Church of Christ with pumpkins.

Pumpkin prices are based on size, ranging from $3 for the smallest to $30 for the largest. Approximately 800 pumpkins are available for sale at the North Canton Church of Christ Pumpkin Patch.

Mini pumpkins and gourds are also available for sale, ranging in price from 50 cents to $2.

North Canton Church of Christ is located at1301 East Maple Street. The Pumpkin Patch is open Monday through Friday 11-7 and 9-3 on Saturday.

There was a time when white pumpkins were a novelty, but they are becoming increasingly common.

Youth Minister Travis Williams pointed out that the Pumpkin Patch at North Canton Church of Christ has yellow and green pumpkins available for sale. Those are two you're not likely to find anywhere else.

Day #31 Shot this one from the window of our upstairs office. It struck me funny how this squirrel is using it's tail as a shield from the wind while it eats. The high today was only in the mid-60s, 30 degrees cooler than Saturday!

Day #45 My buddy Dick Drake, Certified Arborist, trimmed our neighbor's big oak tree this morning. It was hanging over our roof and with winter coming that's not a good thing.

The results are in and the latest Taking Stark County's Pulse poll was a landslide! As big as the banana split at Smith's Old Fashioned Ice Cream (at Smith's Waco Market), and that's huge!!

Which ice cream shop is the best in Stark County?

That was the question asked in the latest Taking Stark County's Pulse poll. Readers of Stark County, Ohio News and Views... responded with just short of 500 votes, 492 to be exact, and left no doubt about which Stark County ice cream shop they consider to be the best of the best.

The winner of the Taking Stark County's Pulse, Best Ice Cream Shop in Stark Couny poll was Smith's Old Fashioned Ice Cream (at Smith's Waco Market).

Of the 492 votes cast 220, or 44% of the total, went to Smith's Old Fashioned Ice Cream (at Smith's Waco Market).

Not only did Smith's Old Fashioned Ice Cream (at Smith's Waco Market) draw 44% of the total vote, it was the only one of 20 entries, equal to the most ever offered in a Taking Stark County's Pulse poll, to break the 200-vote barrier!

The runner-up in the Taking Stark County's Pulse poll to name Stark County's Best Ice Cream Shop was, Merry's.

Merry's drew 124 votes which was equal to 25% of the total number cast.

Looking at the field of 20 Best Ice Cream Shop In Stark County entries, Smith's Old Fashioned Ice Cream (at Smith's Waco Market) and Merry's were the only ones to receive at least 100 votes.

To understand exactly how well Smith's Old Fashioned Ice Cream (at Smith's Waco Market), and Merry's for that matter, did in this poll, consider that the third-place finisher Heggy's Nut Shop, fourth-place finisher Oser's Deli and Dairy and fifth-place finisher New Baltimore Homemade Ice Cream combined for a total of 69 votes!!

Three entries finished with zero votes, while eight others had between one and five votes!!

By comparison, Smith's Old Fashioned Ice Cream (at Smith's Waco Market) won the Best Ice Shop in Stark County poll with 220 votes while The Bittner from Taggarts Ice Cream Parlor won Stark County's Favorite Ice Cream Treat with only 88 votes.

Stark County, Ohio News and Views... readers voted The Quarry Golf Club Stark County's Best Public Golf Course.

I visited The Quarry yesterday to shoot photos I could use in the Best Public Golf Course announcement.

A number of factors go into assessing the quality of a golf course including the club house, the pro shop, the snack bar, the personnel and the way business is conducted. Ultimately, though, it comes down to the quality of the golf course.

With that in mind, I give you The Quarry Golf Club in Canton, Ohio...

Stark County is known as Ohio's Golf Capital and it comes as no surprise that there's a diversity of opinions regarding which of Stark County's Public Golf Courses is best.

Which course is the BEST public golf course in Stark County?

That's the question a recent Taking Stark County's Pulse poll asked, in June during the midst of golf season, and nearly 7 dozen readers responded in a hotly contested poll with the narrowest of margins separating first and second place.

The winner of the Taking Stark County's Pulse poll to name Stark County's Best Public Golf Course is, The Quarry Golf Club.

79 votes were cast in the poll to name Stark County's Best Public Golf Course and the difference between the first- and second-place finishers was six votes!

Of the 79 votes cast for Stark County's Best Public Golf Course 21 went to The Quarry Golf Club, equal to 26% of the total number of votes cast.

The runner-up was The Legends of Massillon, recipient of 15 votes or 18% of the total. The only other of the 10 entries to draw a percentage of the vote in double digits was Tam O' Shanter Golf Course; 10% of the vote, a total of 8 votes, went to Tam O'Shanter.

The Last Full Day Of Summer

September 22nd, the last full day of Summer.

I returned to Perry Township to photograph what has become one of my favorite subects, the circa 1885 octagonal barn, which was originally erected by the Foltz Brothers, that is owned by Robert and Leza Schnabel.

The Schnabels relocated the barn to a piece of property which was once a bison farm. A statue located not far from the barn serves as a reminder of that period in the property's history.

I found that the hay in what was once the bison's pasture had been cut and much of it bailed, which made it easier for me to get around to shoot photos.

The last full day of summer brought beautiful weather, with a high temperature of 76 degrees.

Pumpkin pancakes. I don't recall when exactly I had them for the first time, or where, but we've had them frequently this time of year at many different places.

I recommend the Pumpkin Pecan Pancakes at The Flipside Grille in Magnolia, without hesitation nor qualification. They are, simply, the best.

The Flipside Grille serves breakfast Saturday and Sunday mornings, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.; it is located at 10135 Cleveland Avenue SE (Ohio State Route 800) in Magnolia.

This is the view we have from our dining room at The Flipside Grille. The Flipside is located on Route 800 in Magnolia, approximately 1/2-mile North of the Stark County line.

In the foreground, beyond the bush, you can see the driveway leading to the Super Suds Car Wash and next door to that the Bank of Magnolia's parking lot. The bus you see is turning onto Route 800, heading North.

The Best Peach, Tomato Salsa You Will Ever Eat

If you have been scouring the web for a delicious peach, tomato salsa recipe you needn't look any further. This is the best peach, tomato salsa you will ever eat.

Ingredient List...

10 peaches, 5 yellow and 5 white, chopped
1 large red onion, diced
1 large green bell pepper, diced
1 cubanelle pepper, diced
1 large red bell pepper, diced
2 fresh jalapeno peppers, diced
2 (14 ounce) cans diced tomatoes (Del Monte Green Pepper & Onion and Del Monte Basil, Garlic & Oregano)
1 (28 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
1/4 cup white vinegar
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons chili powder
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
2 teaspoons salt
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 cup water

Directions

In a large pot mix yellow and white peaches, red onions, red bell peppers, green bell pepper and cubanelle pepper.

Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, vinegar and brown sugar.

Season with chili powder, salt, jalapeno peppers and cayenne pepper.

Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer 1 hour. Mix the cornstarch and water, stir into the salsa to thicken. Transfer salsa to glass containers, store in refrigerator.

And there you have it, the best peach, tomato salsa you will ever eat.

I love this view we have out our upstairs office window. It's one you're sure to see again.

This window faces West, so it often provides a preview of the weather we have coming. It's entertaining to watch the squirrels running through and jumping between the two trees. We see rabbits and squirrels in our neighbors yard along with squirrels and occasionally an outside cat roams through. Lots of birds too.

Day #18 Shot this one from the fourth floor of the Magnolia Flouring Mills building. There's a sign at the corner to the right, which is obstructed by the tree, erected by The Friends of Freedom Society * Ohio Underground Railroad Association denoting that the site was the homestead of Richard Elson, co-founder of the Village of Magnolia.

Day #15 Harrison County Courthouse, on U.S. Route 250 om Cadiz.

Day #11 We've had the same mailman in our neighborhood for years. Hey, buddy!

Day #7 They were lining up for The Flipside Grille's pulled pork sandwiches and ribs at Sandy Beaver Canal Days in Magnolia.

Day #6 I saw this car, a 1956 Ford Victoria, I believe, parked at the Dairy Queen, and pulled over just to shoot a picture.

Day #1 Our neighbors put up a bird feeder that provides excellent viewing for both of us. It only took about a half dozen shots to get this gold finch looking at the camera.

Twenty restaurants competed in the Best Casual Dining Restaurant In Stark County poll and Vito Corleone's Italian Grille won convincingly.In fact Vito Corleone's went wire to wire and won going away!

666 votes were cast for Stark County's Best Casual Dining Restaurant and 230, 34% of the total, went to Vito Corleone's Italian Grille; the only one of 20 entries to draw more than 200 votes!!

Benjamin Geiser is considering putting an EATING CHALLENGE on the menu at his Magnolia, Ohio restaurant, The Flipside Grille.

As a test The Flipside Grille extending a mini-challenge. What is the challenge? Eating a TRIPLE burger, 1 1/2 pounds of meat + 1/2 pound of toppings, including three cheeses and bacon, along with two side dishes, approximately 1/2 pound per basket and a beverage. Eat it all in 15 minutes, without leaving the table, and The Flipside Grille picks up the tab. If you're unable to complete the mini-challenge in the allotted time, the price of the meal is $20.

Firefighters Staging Fund Raise For Chip Conde In Canton Tomorrow

A.R. "Chip" Conde, the Republican candidate whose seeking to unseat Canton Mayor William J. Healy II, is kicking off his general election campaign tomorrow with a fund raiser in downtown Canton.

The fund raiser is being hosted by The Canton Professional Firefighter's Association, Local 249.

Local 249 is staging the fund raiser for Chip Conde at the Kresge lot, on Market Avenue between 3rd and 4th Streets. It kicks off at 11 o'clock and runs 'til 3. The donation being requested from those who attend is $20; kids will be admitted FREE.

In addition to raising money for Chip Conde's mayor campaign the firefighters are collecting aluminum cans for the Akron Children's Burn Center.

A variety of activities are planned, aside from providing an opportunity to meet the Republican candidate for mayor, including a Fire Safety Trailer which children can tour, a dunk tank and live music performed by DJ Blaze.

Lunch is being provided by Arcadia Grille.

This view, looking south, illustrates the saying where does the house end and the garden begin, and where does the garden end and the house begin. The living space terrace is like a prow of a ship sailing the mid-western landscape. Do note how the window/door mullions suggest tree trunks, bringing nature right into the house.

My wife and I feel very fortunate indeed to experience living in a great usonian designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
